Prima Facie
PRIMA FACIE
Written by Suzie Miller
Directed by Michael Hurst
Starring Cassandra Woodhouse
“SOMEWHERE. SOMETIME. SOMEHOW SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE.”
Tessa Ensler loves her job. She's worked her way up from a working-class background to being a top criminal defense barrister at the top of her game - prosecuting, cross-examining and winning in the courtroom with her quick wit and intelligence. Fighting to defend those pleading not guilty - including securing freedom for men accused of rape and sexual assault. Innocent until proven guilty is, after all, the bedrock of human rights.
An unexpected event however forces Tessa to confront the very system she has spent her life believing and working within - a system where the lines of patriarchal power and burden of proof are not set up to accommodate the lived experience of sexual assault survivors.
Acclaimed Oliver and Tony award-winning play, Suzie Miller's Prima Facie is an unforgettable story and one-woman tour de force that has the power to question the structure of the legal system and takes us to the heart of where emotion and experience conflict within the system as we know it.
Prima Facie was first produced by Griffin Theatre Company in May 2019 at the SBW Stables Theatre followed by the award-winning 2022 West End premiere at the Harold Pinter Theatre which then travelled to the Golden Theatre on Broadway in 2023. Prima Facie is currently being translated and performed all over the world and in 2023 was also released into a book.
Directed by NZ acting royalty Michael Hurst and performed by Cassandra Woodhouse, NZ Theatre Company is honoured to bring Prima Facie to the New Zealand stage and continue the call to action that this story is demanding worldwide.

AFLOAT 20 Years After The Rise: a new musical
AFloat: 20 years after The Rise: a new musical
written by Sammy Hook and Harrison Maxwell
Afloat: 20 years after The Rise is set in a future where a nuclear plant close to Antarctica malfunctioned, resulting in the rapid melting of polar ice caps.
The event became known as The Rise, as it caused sea levels to obliterate cities and all land is lost to the icy depths. Survivors have created communuties by building habitats on floating debris, coming together to evolve into cities that maintain previous land positions, in the hope that one day the waters will recede.
Our story takes place around 20 years after The Rise on New Zealand waters, where a floating empire has formed. This empire was founded by a woman who is know to the community only as "She". She has kept her community afloat by enforcing rules of safety, some verging on extreme. Aria and Fermata are second-generation survivors and the focus of our story.
They quickly get caught up in a growing rebellion, frustrated by the restrictions forced upon them, and plot to overthrow She to grant the people of the community their freedom.
Aria is offered the ultimate choice by She: betray her life-long friend Fermata and be granted the rebels' freedom, or remain loyal and risk everything.
This musical production includes a cast of 17 talented performers and 20 original songs, and will sweep you along by the ebb and flow of Aria and Fermata's journey, cresting waves of their emotional turmoil, as they plunge into the depths of the final act and crash against the shores of your hearts!

Realm of Tears
Basement Theatre presents
Realm of Tears
A world created to invite imperfection. Be a tangiweto (a sook/sensitive), indulge in pleasure and sensuality, laugh at the intrusive thoughts, step into rage, feel lost, reflect in compassion and accountability. In our current reality where capitalism and individualism is encouraged, therapy talk weaponised, and healing journeys intellectualised rather than felt. It is rare to find space or time to navigate all these sensations. Sit in this ethereal Realm of Tears where the marginalised are invited to unapologetically feel and thrive.

The Sun and the Wind
Te Ahurei Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Arts Festival 2024 & Taurima Vibes
presents
The Sun and the Wind
An award winning play inspired by whānau adoption.
A Māori-kaupapa driven play dealing with mental illness and healing will make its Auckland debut in March.
The Sun and the Wind, written by current Bruce Mason Playwriting Award winner, Tainui Tukiwaho, is about a couple who are caught off guard by two burglars and who the couple mistaken for their deceased son and his wife. It tackles themes of grief, hope, love, and loss.
Produced by Tainui’s brother, Borni Tukiwaho of Taurima Vibes, the story was inspired by the whāngai, Māori adoption, of their mother when she was a baby. She reconnected with her biological whānau in her adult years and saw how her adoption impacted her birth father.
“The Sun and the Wind is a story from a Māori-specific lens, exploring how the depths of despair, and loss of one’s child can shape how we navigate our world and the long-lasting impact grief has on the well-being of our people,” Tainui says.
The play was a finalist at the prestigious Adams Playwriting Award in 2022 and has been performed in Wellington. The production will tour regionally after its Auckland performances. The Sun and the Wind stars Taungaroa Emile, Joe Dekkers-Reihana, Tuakoi Ohia, and Julie Edwards, who won the Best Actress prize at last year’s Wellington Theatre Awards for her role. It’s directed by Edward Peni.
Tainui promises that the production will engage audiences of all ages with its dynamic storytelling, compelling characters, and visually stunning and award winning performances.
“Our team has meticulously crafted a production that merges traditional Māori storytelling techniques with cutting-edge stagecraft, promising an immersive and unforgettable experience,” he says.
Show producer, Borni, says he founded the theatre company Taurima Vibes to give a voice to marginalised and undervalued communities and to bridge the gap between the privileged and under-resourced.
“This play has been crafted to generate insightful korero, provoke and challenge the colonised ideals that we are constantly told are the ‘best’ ways to deal with our grief and mental health needs and asks the question: How do we reclaim our own means of healing?”

Romeo & Juliet
Titirangi Theatre presents
Romeo & Juliet
Directed by Ross Brannigan.
William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet has been called many things, including ‘the greatest love story ever told’ and it is as relevant today as it ever was.
This is a play about the amazing strength of first love; about the importance of remembering how it is possible to love unconditionally, in the face of everything the older generation can throw at you.
The world may not always be a kind place, but it could be a better one if only we could remember the purity of the first time you gave your heart thinking that no one else has ever felt a passion so strong, and that it will last forever.
There is no secret about how this tragic story ends. It runs like an unstoppable freight train speeding, for an action-packed two hours, to its inevitable end. It deals with themes of a society where people are polarised, almost tribally and where peer and parental expectations can be fatal.

100 Things
Ōtepoti Fringe presents 100 Things
100 Things is the craziest new improv show in Tāmaki Makaurau, and it's coming down to Ōtepoti for the first time ever!
Can these improv BFF's set the Guinness World Record for most audience suggestions used per minute in an improv show?
In this improvised comedy spectacular, three great friends and talented improvisors will gather 100 audience suggestions (yeah that's right, one hundred suggestions) and then incorporate every single one of them into the 90 minute show. At least, that's the goal! Will they achieve it? Come along and find out! If they make it, they'll set two new Guiness World Records for most ask-fors used per minute in an improv show. How's that for an original world record category?!
Performed by Rebecca Mary Gwendolon, Izzy Renton and Frankie Browne; three improvisor besties who are always hearing what great chemistry they have together, so they decided to put it to the ultimate test.
"[Mary Gwendolon] and Browne immediately form a natural rapport as a dynamic double act with excellent comedic timing." - Theatrescenes
"Gwendolon and Renton ... have an excellent rapport. Over the course of the next sixty minutes, comical and wholesome shenanigans ensue, which regularly have the audience raucous with laughter." - Red Raven
As winners of the Late Night Knife Fight improv showdown in Tāmaki Makaurau, 100 Things received professional coaching to develop their original 15 minute show into a 30 minute and then 90 minute show. You'll be seeing the final version after all that testing and development has already happened up in Auckland. Lucky you!
Imagine if the TV show Taskmaster had a baby with the Middleditch and Schwartz Netflix improv comedy special ... that's kind of what 100 Things is like. Our task is to take one hundred things and turn them into one story.
Be a part of history and get a ticket to see the most audience suggestions ever used in an improv show.*

Only the Stars Know Where Ive Been
An ode to aspirations of lassoing passing asteroids and inflating the moon.
Ctenophora Co. presents Only the Stars Know Where I’ve Been
Only the Stars Know Where I’ve Been is a full-length contemporary dance work. Calling upon dust collectors, it sculpts a vision of an approaching solar cycle. Time darts where it pleases, entangling utopias into a tapestry of sentiment, before the seasons of doubt arrive. Musings of youth somersault over one another and meet dreams of the drowned - a brooding pair navigate the inscriptions on their skin.
This intricate and painterly duet is a reluctant farewell to past versions of yourself. It traverses Queer Temporality in a surreal yet meditative coming-of-age. The dancers observe and mimic each other, in a hypnotic but tender attempt to style their own identities. This whimsical show will entrance you with its tender performance, sculpted choreography, and uncanny world. It conjures an opportunity to introspect and converse with your quiet contemplations.
Ctenophora Co. warmly thanks the team of Wellesley Studios and the Wellesley Studios New Graduate Residency for their generosity and support of this project.

Nation-wide tour of longest-running contemporary dance company makes stop in Auckland
Footnote New Zealand Dance, Aotearoa’s leading contemporary dance company, are bringing their critically acclaimed show If You Know You Know, to nine centres across the country, returns to Auckland with two night season at Q Loft.
“IYKYK is a show to inspire the next generation of dancers in New Zealand. It's physical; the dancers never stop moving, showing off their athleticism. It’s dark. There are fight scenes, romance scenes, and a red clock on the wall that is counting us down to the end of the world.” - Anita Hunziker, Artistic Director of Footnote Dance.
With a passion for growing audiences for live dance, Footnote has ensured that this is a dance show everyone will enjoy. “Our mission is to enrich Aotearoa by amplifying dance as an art form. What better way to do that than take the highest quality shows to as many communities as possible?” from the company’s General Manager, Zoë Nicholson.
The tour will begin in Wellington and go on to Palmerston North, Hamilton, Auckland, Whakatāne, Gisborne, Queenstown and Christchurch. The dancers will teach masterclasses to budding young dancers in Auckland, supporting them on their journey.
Founded in 1985, Footnote Dance is Aotearoa’s longest-standing contemporary dance company and is a trailblazer for the dance community.
They support artists, teach dance to thousands of young people across New Zealand, and tour dance works nationally and internationally.

The Ocean Star
Dolphin Theatre presents The Ocean Star
by Michael Galvin
Directed by John Edwards
Yes, written by our own Michael Galvin (Dr Chris Warner, Shortland Street) The Ocean Star tells the story dog Brian, who just wants a quiet life. He’s content dot stay at home, reviewing the books and CDs that land on his doorstep and watching “Fear Factor” with his son Jay, a short film maker (until the funding dried up). But what lands on his doorstep next is his younger son Ted, and suddenly it’s his own family which is up for review. Ted may or may not be suffering from an incurable disease. Jay seems to be nursing a terrible resentment. Then there’s the small matter of Brian’s agoraphobia.
With a keen sense for the absurd, playwright Michael Galvin has crafted an exquisitely dark and comic play. Your own family never seemed so sane.

The Dumb Waiter
Potent Pause Productions presents
The Dumb Waiter
The Dumb Waiter is a brilliant one-act play by British playwright Harold Pinter. A modernist tragicomedy, it tells the story of two assassins while they wait in a basement room for their target to appear. In their apathy, they quarrel about trivial issues and question the hit. Soon their sense of reality begins to falter, and strange events unfold inside the basement. The play’s absurd series of events is characteristic of Pinter’s work, which exposed the irrational features and backward logic of modern stories and dilemmas.
Presented by (potent pause) Productions, who’s relationship to Mr Pinters work continues, is once again proud and chuffed to be performing this great one act play.
Starring Stephen Papps and Michael Lawrence.

HR The Musical
Artsense Productions NZ
presents
HR the Musical
A performance revue like you'll never get in an office tower, this cheeky number takes on the ridiculous and objectionable in the modern workplace in the form of the blues, rap, latin plainchant and more to see what meets expectations and what needs improvement.
The songs, written and composed in a wicked range of genres by Amy Mansfield, play with such hot topics as coworker communications ('Mansplain it to me') and Uniformity and Exclusion ('CEO Song: Okay so I'm white') across the worlds of corporates, public sector and the precarious gig economy.
Drawing on influences as diverse as comedy TV series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times, Tricia Hersey's Rest is Resistance and David Graeber's Bullshit Jobs, H.R. The Musical will have you laughing with despair, and wondering - along with the rest of the world - when the revolution is coming, then putting it on your to-do list.
The cast includes Mika Austin, the critically acclaimed darling of Artsense Productions' I Didn't Invite You Here to Lecture Me and you are [not] alone here, along with the madly talented Zoe Triggs and Lizzie Buckton, who'll sing, dance and play various blowable and plucky instruments throughout.
Gather your co-workers and your boss and get to this work!
Development audiences had this to say:
“Really funny and entertaining”
“Confrontingly honest”
“Characters I recognised and could identify with”
“So much genius in there”
“I loved every minute!”
