The Ocean Star

Dolphin Theatre presents The Ocean Star
by Michael Galvin
Directed by John Edwards

Yes, written by our own Michael Galvin (Dr Chris Warner, Shortland Street) The Ocean Star tells the story dog Brian, who just wants a quiet life.  He’s content dot stay at home, reviewing the books and CDs that land on his doorstep and watching “Fear Factor” with his son Jay, a short film maker (until the funding dried up).  But what lands on his doorstep next is his younger son Ted, and suddenly it’s his own family which is up for review.  Ted may or may not be suffering from an incurable disease.  Jay seems to be nursing a terrible resentment.  Then there’s the small matter of Brian’s agoraphobia.

With a keen sense for the absurd, playwright Michael Galvin has crafted an exquisitely dark and comic play. Your own family never seemed so sane.

Mr Burns: A Post-Electric Play

Seed Theatre Company presents
MR BURNS: A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY

By Anne Washburn
Music by Michael Friedman
Lyrics by Anne Washburn

An amateur production of Mr Burns: a post-electric play by special arrangement with Samuel French Inc and The Play Bureau.

After the collapse of civilisation, a group of survivors gather and begin to piece together the plot of "The Simpsons" episode "Cape Feare" entirely from memory. 7 years later, this and other snippets of pop culture (sitcom plots, commercials, jingles, and pop songs) have become the live entertainment of a post-apocalyptic society, sincerely trying to hold onto its past. 75 years later, these are the myths and legends from which new forms of performance are created. A paean to live theatre and the resilience of Bart Simpson through the ages, Mr. Burns is an animated exploration of how the pop culture of one era might evolve into the mythology of another.

CONTENT WARNING: Violence, firearms, weaponry, climate anxiety, depictions of death, descriptions of nuclear apocalypse, homicide, homercide. Some parts of the play are performed in near darkness with moving/flashing light sources. This play is recommended for mature audiences.

WHEN: 18 Nov - 2 Dec

David Veart –  Historian and Writer
Creative Talks from Pumphouse Theatre

Back by popular demand local historian David Veart takes us on a journey back to childhood. He explores the idea that toys are not just made for playing with, but they are also serious business.

In his book Hello Girls and Boys! David explored a few centuries of pocket knives and plasticine to take us deep into the childhoods of Aotearoa – under the eye of mum or running wild at the end of the section, with a doll in the hand or an arrow in the ear, hula hooping or assembling kitsets. There’s Māori and Pakeha learning knucklebones from each other, young Aucklanders establishing the largest Meccano club in the world. This talk will revisit the toys, the crazes and playtimes and preoccupations of big and little New Zealand kids for generations.
