Trick of the Light Theatre presents
TRÖLL
After captivating audiences around the world, award-winning theatre-makers Trick of the Light are coming to Q Theatre’s Loft with Tröll - a lo-fi wi-fi fable with the retro vibe of Stranger Things. Tröll combines Nordic folklore with internet myth, through puppets, projection, and shadow-play. This darkly comic tale of the dial-up age will play from 8 - 13 August 2022.
It’s 1998. Otto is twelve but online he’s thirteen and he’s pretty sure he gets away with it. He lives with his mum, dad and sister, a chain-smoking Icelandic granny, and an ancient malevolent troll that’s living in the wall...
Trick of the Light are no strangers to inventively staged shows. The Bookbinder (a sell-out at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015 and 2016, and Winner of the Children’s Theatre Award at Fringe World 2015) was performed around a handcrafted pop-up book and entirely lit by lamps onstage, whilst The Road That Wasn’t There (Children’s Theatre Award Winner, Fringe World 2016 and Adelaide Fringe 2016) wove a dark fairy tale through shadow-play and live music.
With Tröll, the company wanted to bring the innovative design and intricate narrative of those works into the contemporary world, with staging that transforms devices that surround us every day: so mobile phones become light sources, keyboards become skyscrapers, and monsters creep out from the cables...
First staged at the foot of a staircase to an audience of only twelve people, the show received five-star reviews and two Weekly Awards at the 2019 Fringe World Festival in Perth.
Tröll is aimed at adults and children 10+.
