Pork & Poll Taxes

26 June— 10 July (1).png

Pork & Poll Taxes follows a Chinese family across Aotearoa and China during the Chinese Poll Tax era. It is a timely narrative that explores family relationships, migration, and racism. Our team is excited to bring this story to life, and is another step in our fight for better Asian representation in the creative arts, and in history.

“新⾦山 San Gam Saan, New Gold Mountain - it makes you believe gold simply sprouts up from the ground ready to be harvested.”

Proudly Asian Theatre and Hand Pulled Collective are proud to present the premiere season of Pork & Poll Taxes, a play by Talia Pua. playing this 10th - 14th August at the Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre.

This theatrical experience is directed by multi-disciplinary creative, Talia Pua, and starring an all-Asian cast; Benjamin Teh, Anna Lee, Kelvin Ta, Celine Dam, and Jo Lo. It is produced by Marianne Infante, and assistant produced by Natalya Mandich-Dohnt.The men were sent to New Gold Mountain (Aotearoa) to help their struggling family forge a better life. But, unlike the name suggests, gold does not sprout up from the ground ready to be harvested. With increasing civil unrest back home, and mounting racial tensions in New Gold Mountain, a family must reconsider their beliefs on belonging, sacrifice, and family when the father chooses to immigrate.
